21 Q. What is true faith?

A. True faith is

not only a knowledge and conviction

that everything God reveals in his Word is true;1

it is also a deep-rooted assurance.2

created in me by the Holy Spirit3 through the gospel.4

that, out of sheer grace earned for us by Christ,5

not only others, but I too.6

have had my sins forgiven,

have been made forever right with God,

and have been granted salvation.7

John 17:3,17

Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

Heb. 11:1-3

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

James 2.19

You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that-and shudder.

Rom. 4:18-21

Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead-since he was about a hundred years old-and that Sarah's womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

Rom. 5:1

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Rom. 10:10

For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.

Heb. 4:14-16

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Matt. 16:15-17

"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven."

John 3:5

Jesus answered, I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit."

Acts 16:14

One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message.

Rom. 1:16

I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

Rom. 10:17

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

1 Cor. 1:21

For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

Rom. 3:21-26

But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

Gal. 2:16

know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

Eph. 2:8-10

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

6

Gal. 2:20

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

7

Rom. 1:17

For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Heb. 10.10

And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
