In Evangelism it has been said
"We must get the Gospel right, before we can get it out." This is exactly right.
Unless we correctly understand what the Bible teaches as the Gospel, we will not have a
saving message to give to the world.
There are certain truths which
are non-negotiable for the integrity of the Gospel. The true, biblical, Christian faith is
anchored in them and can only be preserved as they are maintained. A loss of or deviation
from any one of them will lead to dire consequences in the rest of the Christian life and
practice. In fact, without them there would be no Christian life. I believe that if any of
these truths is either neglected or distorted, the message of the Gospel will not be
clearly or properly heard. If someone asked me to state what I believe to be of bottom
line importance - that for which I would be willing to die - I would tell them these
things listed below.
I have placed these truths in a
sequence of importance, one building on the other and contingent on it for its truth. For
example, if one does not believe correctly about the nature of Scripture - that it is the
final authority and sufficient for the knowledge of salvation - then the many abrasive and
convicting truths of Scripture will not be received. If one does not believe in the
Holiness of God as revealed in Scripture, then one will not really understand the true
sinfulness of sin. If one does not understand the true sinfulness of sin, then one will
not really understand why salvation can only come through Christ alone. And so on.
This page will link you to other pages addressing each of the essential truths for
getting the Gospel right.
